Making trade-offs in public health: A brief opinion poll
Did you know that most of the increase in life expectancy over the past century has been due to such public health programs as safety laws, vaccinations, and hygiene promotion? Medical interventions have been dramatically effective for many people, but public health programs have had a more significant impact on lifespan increases and overall improvements in the health of the entire population.
In order to gain the best use of our public dollars, we have to set priorities and make trade-offs. These priorities are based on scientific evidence, but also on public opinion.
