2009 Photo Contest Winners!
When we got more than 100 entries to CHP’s first public health photo contest, “As I See It,” we were surprised and impressed. But when we started looking at the photos and the captions, we were blown away. The photos teens from across Oregon sent in were great, and we had a hard time choosing just three students to receive awards. But that’s what we had to do, so here are the three we chose:
First Place: Alexis Gomez, 16, Century High School (Hillsboro, OR) for Confidence

Second Place: Banlin Garcia, 16, Century High School (Hillsboro, OR) for Are You My Mother?

Third Place: Vishnu Rajan, 18, St. Helens High School (St. Helens, OR) for Demonstration of a Lost Mind

We received photos from people aged 13 to 18 years old, from a dozen schools across Oregon (and a few homeschoolers, too), from Saint Helens to Grants Pass and lots of places in between.
These students clearly demonstrated their understanding about how their community can help or deter them from making healthy choices, and they used their camera lens and the photo captions to explore this idea in many ways. Take a look at the submissions on our Flickr page and tell us how you see it.
Do these photo inspire you? We’d love to hear the ways you see health and community. What are your ideas about getting and keeping youth engaged in health and wellness? Let us know in the comments section, below.
We think every student who submitted a photo to our contest is a winner, and we’ll be celebrating them at Portland’s First Thursday event. All photos will be on display and refreshments will be served.
