Oregon Receives Settlement from Pfizer for Pushing More Expensive Drugs

The state of Oregon will receive $4 million from Pfizer Inc. for deceptive promotion of two drugs, one of which was removed from the market in 2005 due to serious side effects.

The investigation concluded that Pfizer deceived the public when they promoted Celebrex and Bextra as more effective and safer than similar over-the counter medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen. Oregon received $500,000 in 2003 for improper promotion of Zithromax, and $800,000 in 2004 for promotion of Neurontin for non-FDA-approved uses.

Just a word of warning to anyone who thinks the drug companies have our health interest, or our financial interest, in their list of top priorities.
