Who could oppose Farm to School?

Oregon House Bill 2800 is proposed legislation that would allocate up to 15 cents per lunch and 7 cents per breakfast served in Oregon public schools to incorporate Oregon agricultural products into school meals, and provide grants for the support of school gardens and other agriculture and food-based learning programs.

According to sponsors, the innovative program will add a much-needed stimulus to the state’s economy, feed hungry kids, whose numbers are growing as the economy worsens.

More than that, it would feed them fresh, local, seasonal, Oregon produce.

Oregonians are now beginning to enjoy the early harvests of our diverse agricultural bounty. Under this proposed legislation, schools would connect with local agriculture to bring these delicious foods to school children. Cafeterias, school gardens, and farms could even serve as classrooms where kids learn about the seasons, about growing food from seed to fruit, and the deliciousness of freshly picked produce.

This could stimulate many more local food purchases with an estimated return of investment of 241%.

It could create an estimated 477 jobs in Oregon.

It could establish good eating habits in our children, which will make a huge dent in the obesity epidemic.

Seriously, if there’s a reason to oppose this bill, it would be nice to hear about it, right here.
